So...What Do I Do For Fun?

When I was thinking of a title for this post, I first thought of Christina Aguilera’s Genie in a Bottle — specifically these lines:
I’m a genie in a bottle, baby, you gotta rub me the right way…
Now, don’t assume anything salacious. I thought they best described me as a person, outside of my writing life.
When I write, I put on different hats — some are entertaining, particularly my dating adventures, and some are on serious topics. But in real life, I am quite the boring person — a workaholic who loves what she does.
So what do I do for fun?
Recently, I was talking to someone who is juggling multiple things - being a single parent to very young children, a house, a new job, and a new relationship. Still, they manage to pencil in a vacation now and then. I appreciate the fact that they prioritize rest, self-care, and a bit of fun. As the saying goes, where there’s a will, there’s a way.
When I do take a vacation, I end up working. It’s a choice, and I am unapologetic about it.
I also practice social minimalism and emotional budgeting.
Fancy words for sure, but if you strip it down, it’s basically saying I limit my socializing to the bare minimum because it isn’t something I enjoy.
Of course, there are certain situations I can’t avoid, and in those, I am in a performative mode. If it requires impressing someone, I turn on the charm. But once the performance is over, the switch is turned down to dim.
Energy-saving mode is the right word here.
With my loved ones, I am calm and consistent. I am the reliable one — the energy source, if you will. I don’t mind because I am there for them, out of love, not obligation.
But there are times when something or someone stirs something in me in such a profound way that it’s like a bulb lighting up to full wattage💡
I crave those moments not just because it feels electric but because it’s so rare.
Sometimes I think something in me must be broken that I rarely get excited about things, people, or vacations — except for invigorating nature walks, Nina Simone, and gamboling kittens 🐱
Men are predictable. Events are noisy. Vacations require logistics and a break from my strict routines. My relatives are nosy. I’m so done with all of them.
So what is left is work, work, work — as a distraction, as a passion, and as a nice cushion.
Now you understand why I said I am boring — no fun, actually, unless you are into laser-focused people — assassin vibes, lol 🥷
But rub me the right way, and I’m not so bad — not really. I’ve been known for my dry wit on occasion and am a certified excellent kisser 😘

Yana, your wit & style are undeniable!
I really get the socialization part although I love interacting with international people while on vacay. I learn so much.
